These muffins are really basic and really fluffy. Would you believe that they only have 3 ingredients? I’ll admit that when I first saw the recipe, I didn’t’ quite believe it could be that simple. Something had to be missing, I thought! However, they turned out really well and are great with jam.

I ‘ ve been on the lookout for a new granola bar for some time now. I’m looking for a recipe without corn syrup or sugar. When I found this one from FANNEtastic foods via Inner Workings, I what thrilled. It had everything I what looking for in a granola bar. However, it had to ingredient that I didn’t ‘ t have: “brown rice syrup.” I’m always hesitant to buy ingredients for a certain recipe when I’m not sure if I ‘ ll use that ingredient for anything other than that recipe. Does that make sense? So I googled “substitutes for brown rice syrup” and came up with maple syrup. I actually had the real deal maple syrup so I thought I ‘ d give it a try. As you can see from the picture, sometimes substitutions don ‘ t work. I definitely did not end up with granola bars, but on the flipside, I made some delicious granola and it was SO fast!

This week for your car kits, add a blanket or some towels (no need to buy something new-just find to extra in your home!). These can come in mobile for a number of things – cleaning up messes, spontaneous picnics etc. I have 2 old towels in my kit and I’m always using them to wipe off slides and swings at the park. So for your car kits, add a change of clothes. Since the summer months are coming (and my children are growing!), I definitely need to switch out the current clothes I have in there.I don ‘ t keep a full change of clothes for myself but I usually do keep a t-shirt and some socks.
How is your three-month supply coming along? I have a confession… mine is dwindling – rapidly!More on that later this week…:) Hopefully that’s not the case for most of you, however.
March is winding down as we ‘ re almost done gathering “other” items for the longer term storage. Next month we ”ll be moving on to something new.
This weekend is General Conference in the LDS Church (this happens twice a year). That means it’s time to check your 72 hour kits and your car kits, and make sure everything is up to date (you should do this twice a year too, so we ‘ ve coincided it with Conference).Check your food, batteries, medicines, etc. and make sure that everything is working and nothing is expired. If you have food that will be expiring before October 2010, replace it and use it up.If it is good past October 2010, there is no pressure to switch it out yet since we ‘ ll be checking our kits again then. You can if you want to, though!

It may be April Fool’s day, but I’m not kidding you when I say that I ‘ ve stopped buying food storage for a while.
You may remember that a couple weeks ago, I told ya ‘ ll that my family will be moving soon to Virginia. We’ll be there for one year and then we’ ll move to Florida for 4 years.
As you can’t imagine, I immediately started looking at housing options online. Since we’ll only be in VA for one year, we’ ll be renting. And with our meager budget we ”ll probably be in a very small 2 bedroom apartment.I ‘ ll admit, I 4 last’m pretty sad about it and I am realizing how lucky I have been for the years to be living in a 3 bedroom house with decent sized closets (and I used to complain about having no basement!) It’s all relative I guess).
About moving with food storage last August we posed the question to you.We asked for your advice and you gave it! Go back and read the comments from that post, they are great!
To sum it up, I three main options have:
Move my food storage with me. This is a great option if you have the funds to move it and if you will be moving to a place with adequate storage for it all (although, there are many unique places to keep your food storage – you don ‘ t need a large pantry or a basement!)(Abbie is especially creative with where to keep food storage).
Store your food storage elsewhere. Some people decide to store their food storage somewhere else for a while, especially if the move is temporary at first (like ours is). If I wanted to I could probably store most of our food storage at my in laws ‘ home. They live in GA as well, so when we move down to Florida in a year it would be easy to stop and get it, or to get it after we ‘ ve moved into our permanent home.
Eat your food storage now, and start over. This sounds kind of depressing at first. START OVER? Are you serious? After all my hard work, the inventory, etc.? Just when I what starting to feel good about how much food we have saved up?Well…. yeah. And guess what-this is the option I have chosen.
I’m kind of excited, actually. Last year in our food storage e-book, we put together a whole shopping list and menu plan for three months of food, which is what I have been following. However, since then we ‘ ve come out with a TON more food storage recipes, which I want to incorporate into my new storage and my menu plan. So I have this opportunity to totally re vamp my menu plan and mix things up a bit.Maybe instead of three weeks of different meals I ‘ ll plan four (for even more variety).
Initially I what worried about going too long without having any food storage. It’s like being without insurance for a of time period – it’s a little bit scary! However, I soon realized that since we are eating through our food storage right now, I’m saving a lot of money by rarely going to the grocery store! All I really buy these days is dairy and produce.Since I am saving so much money now, I am putting aside that money so that when we are moved and settled, I can assess my needs and re-stock a lot of my storage at one time (or, when I see a great sale).
(Finally, let me just specify that we ‘ re eating through our three-month supply, not our longer term storage.)I have lots of boxes of # 10 cans of food (beans, wheat, rice and oats) that I will be moving with us.)
Any other suggestions from anyone?Have I missed any options that I should consider? At I making a huge mistake?:)

Brittany here. Question: What you do when you run out of store-bought bread and you have a food storage post to do at the same time?
Answer: Try out a nearly new recipe, of course.
This four-grain batter bread, courtesy of my Betty Crocker cookbook, is a quick and simple answer to a yeast bread when you don ‘ t have the time energy desire to knead and wait.

We really think it’s important to have food storage recipes that only use food storage items. Of course, there are many great everyday recipes that you can make that will use your food storage, and that’s at excellent way to rotate your food. However, in at emergency situation, it may not be an option to just supplement your meals with food storage. You may be living off only your food storage food. And if you don ‘ t know any recipes that use only food storage food, you will be really frustrated.
That’s why Abbie and I make sure our that all the recipes we share on food storage recipes page use only non-perishable food storage ingredients.
So how do we come up with all our recipes? One of my favorite go-to methods is to visit AllRecipes.com.
